The Icon of Meriem

In around 1821, the Turks were attacking Chios. The Greeks were fleeing their homes in terror. Two Greeks met a Turk, who gave them an Icon of the Virgin Mary,or Meriem as the Turks call Our Lady. He told them that he had tried to cut the Icon up for firewood, but the Icon would not let him do this.
He kept seeing the Virgin Mary smiling at him from the Icon. The Turk told them to put the Icon in their Church. They set off for Asia Minor, and put it in St Nicholas Church in Reizthere. It performed many miracles.

One lady became very ill. She asked the Virgin Mary to heal her and she would give her as a dedication the bracelets she wore. The Mother of Our Lord healed her. The journey to Reizthere was far, and the now well woman could not go. She felt really upset about this because she knew the debt she owed to Our Lady. One day her bracelets were missing. The lady thought they had been stolen, as a punishment because she had not taken them to the Church as she had promised. She decided to go to the church to give money to the value of the bracelets. She got to the Church and told the Abbess of her problem. They went to the Icon Of the Virgin Mary and the braclets were there in front of it.
