In 1560 a Turkish Ship was nearing Halkida on its way to Skiathos in Greece. On board was a Christian sailor called Demetrios. He was a good man, old in years. As the ship was moving along in the sea, the wind suddenly died and the ship stopped. Demetrios looked over the side of the ship and saw an Icon of the Virgin Mary on the water. He lowered himself down and picked it up. He kissed the Icon and presented it to the Captain of the ship , a Turk called Mehmet. Instantly the wind rose, and the ship made its way towards Halkida. As they reached Limni the wind died again and the ship stopped. After many hours of struggle, they managed to reach Kantili . The winds, however, rose again and pushed the ship back towards Limni. Once they reached Limni, the winds died again. The Captain tried to take the ship onwards towards its destination, but the winds kept pushing it back to Limni. It was then that Demetrios went to the Captain and told him that they Icon had to stay at Limni. The Captain agreed. The Ships crew informed the Village of Kastria of the finding of the Icon, and the villagers came to collect the Icon with full ceremony. Demetrios gave them the Icon and they put it in the Church of St Anne. In June 1944 the Virgin Mary saved Limni from the Germans who were intending to destroy the Village with everyone in it. The Germans had killed 600 residents in Distomo and were intent to do likewise in Limni. As they approached the Village, a Hand was seen in the road, blocking their path.
