Panayia of Elikonos, Greece
(The Evangellistria)

This Monastery is in a beautiful green location. The first church in the Monastery was built in the twelfth century housing the Icon of the Annunciation. Many Greek heros of the Revolution used the Monastery as a refuge including Karaiskakis.

In 1687 the Greeks started an uprising against the Turks. Among the Greeks were Sbanos and Kourmas. They hid in the Monastery to wait for help. The Turks waited to attack under the leadership of Moukanta Passas. He sent out a party to check out the area before the attack. They saw a Lady dressed in black. She told them to leave the area. They went back to Moukanta to tell him . He was furious and orderd the attack. The Lady appeared for a second time and told them again to leave. Moukanta went into a rage and ordered a full scale attack on the Monastery. As the hordes advanced, the earth opened up in front of them, and swallowed the entire army. No one knows exactly how many died. It is believed the number of dead went into the thousands. the place where the earth opened up is known as "Voula"-where the Turkish army was sunk. Only two people survived. Moukanta and his secretary. The Virgin Mary led them to the door of the Monastery and vanished. They went into the church on their knees and saw the Lady on the Icon was the self same Lady who led them there. They begged forgiveness and asked the Monks to make them their slaves. Later they were baptised and beacame Monks.Moukanta was to later become the Abbott. He worked hard and gave his considerable fortune to the Monastery. The area of the Monastery today is called the Naidrio of Moukanta.
